News You Can Use

Types of Coverage

If you live in New Hampshire or Vermont, or your auto is principally garaged in one of these states, make sure you're adequately covered.

Your auto insurance policy may include several different types of coverage.  Knowing what each of them covers can help you ensure that you get the best auto insurance coverage at the best rate.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage covers damage you may cause to other people's property and injuries to the people themselves.

Collision  -   covers damage to your own vehicle in an accident.

Comprehensive  -   covers fire damage to your vehicle, break-ins, vandalism or theft, as well as natural disasters (earthquake, hail, hurricanes, flood, etc.) unless the vehicle is overturned (which is considered a collision).

Medical Payments  -   covers medical expenses for your injuries.  This "good faith" coverage guarantees immediate medical payments for you, your passengers, and other parties, regardless of who was at fault.  It also covers you and members of your household in any accident involving an automobile, whether you are on foot, on a bicycle, in a friend's car. etc.

Uninsured Motorist  -   protects you if you are injured in an accident with someone who does not carry liability insurance.

Underinsured Motorist  - protects you if you are injured in an accident with someone who carries insufficient liability insurance.

Extra Coverage  - covers expenses for towing, labor, temporary replacement vehicles, etc. and are generally add-ons to your policy.

Youthful Operators

It is important to list all children ('youthful operators') on your policy.
If you do not list driving age children on your policy and that child is involved in an accident, the auto insurance company will pay the loss; however, the insurance company is only required to pay according to the minimum limits of 25,000/50,000/25,000.  In addition to being held liable for the remainder of the damage yourself, you can be charged for unpaid premiums  for adding your child to your policy.

Drivers in the 16-24 age group account for nearly one-third of all auto accidents and fatalities.
Since the exposure to the insurance company is substantially increased, the premiums are higher for people in this age group.

There is a difference in premiums for young drivers who live at home and those who are away at college.
The young operator away at college presents less of a risk to the household car since he/she is assumed to be home less often, thereby reducing the exposure (and therefore the premium).
